Who We Are

Child Start was established in 1958, created in response to unmet needs for child care in the community. The United Fund (now United Way of the Plains) had appointed a committee to look into the problem, and that committee recommended the establishment of a new agency to oversee the sponsored services.

What We Do

Child Start supports early childhood development by directly serving over 580 Head Start children (ages 0–5) and their families with comprehensive, year-round care. We maintain a database of local childcare providers to assist families in finding quality care, as well as offer training and mentorship to individuals in the early childhood field to ensure high standards. Additionally, we advocate for policies that support young children, families, and high-quality early education in our community.
